The types of legal matters that Nevada Legal Services may consider for representation include: public services and benefits (denials, reductions, terminations and overpayments of benefits related to food stamps, Supplement Security Income (SSI), county welfare, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), work related issues (unemployment compensation, earned income tax credit and tax preparation, public and subsidized housing matters, mobile home park tenancies, health care (Medicaid or county medical assistance, and Nevada Checkup), and Indian Law (tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction and individual Native Americans with select Indian Law Issues).

Nevada Legal Services Elko County Office does NOT handle cases in the following areas: bankruptcies, divorces, legal separations, annulments, name changes, child support, wills, criminal matters, persons who are incarcerated, personal injury, immigration for non-citizens other than family visas and VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) self petitions.

While we do not provide assistance in family law matters we do have a panel of private lawyers that we refer clients to for consultations and sometimes "unbundled" representation; where a lawyer helps on just one part of a case, such as a custody hearing.

Eligibility:Eligibility depends upon the type of legal assistance you need and your income level. To be eligible for assistance through Nevada Legal Services you must be an individual, household organization, group or Indian tribe with a low income. During your first appointment you will either be advised and/or briefly assisted by one of the advocates or you will be referred. If formal representation is requested, Nevada Legal Services staff will make that eligibility decision at a later date.
Appointment Needed:It is best to call the office first. An attorney or paralegal may be able to advise you over the telephone via hotline or refer you to the office for an appointment or interview.
